Suriya had once again proved that he is a master at work. Expectation about the movie was little less compared to his previous films, due to continuous commercial gimmicks like ayan, adhavan,... In recent times, I decided not to encourage masala films. But if it is suriya at the helm, then it is worth watching whatever be the story line. He had showed that he can also do commercial films and make it better than the stereotypical commercial heroes. I am really proud of you suriya, for being your fan.
Story line of singam, nothing special, is about a police inspector’s confrontation with a goon. But screenplay doesn’t allow you to think about the hoary storyline. While watching the film, you never feel bored, you never look at your watch and that is the success of Hari.
Hari’s most of the films are based on similar storylines. But still he makes it watch worthy. He has proved that he is a master in his art, art of making commercial films. Of course, it is difficult to rate Singam more or equal in status to suriya’s previous cop film, Kakha Kakha, but it is just a tad behind it. Kakha kakha has attained a cult status for cop movies and it is difficult to overcome it.Comparing it to Hari’s previous cop film, Saamy, it is more or less equal or in few scenes even better.
Anushka, the lead lady, has really done what was expected out of her. Singam is not a women centred story, at the same time it has not used the heroine was songs alone. She even has a scene to redeem the confidence of hero who is about to chicken out due to villain’s overture. She looks really good, though taller than suriya in few scenes. This film will strengthen her fan base in tamil nadu and one of her good films in tamil after ‘Arundhati’. The big star cast of the movie includes vijayakumar, radharavi, Nasser, nilalgal ravi, achi manorama. Singam has not provided them roles to showcase their talents, but their presence adds up to pluses of the movie.
I am really sorry for Prakash Raj. National award winning actor was just aloud to shout and scream. I personally feel Prakash Raj should not accept such insipid roles in future. That role of a villain doesn’t require so much talent, any one could do that role. It’s time our tamil film finds some other villain and leaves this talented actor to concentrate on good films.
Most interesting scenes in the movie are the one where Suriya confronts with Assistant commissioner with the dialogues, ‘This is the one and only station under my control’, and the scene with Prakash Raj where he utters ‘Onki adicha onra ton weight da’. Suriya has exuded lot of confidence as Duraisingam and he has really reveled in that role.
Vivek has done a okay job handling the comedy part. It’s high time he realize the irritation caused by his double entendres. I really wonder why does he goes on with lot of double meaning dialogues throughout the movie. At least Suriya should ensure that such trifle dialogues don’t creep into his films, as he is becoming a more family hero, entertainer for all kind of people. Children fan base had started moving to suriya from vijay.
Songs are good. DSP stamp is in all songs, Full of energy. Kadhal vandhale, you stole my heart are foot tapping numbers. Even other songs are hearable.
The film has few things on the flip side. When the villain shoots the heroine, we definitely know she will get cured soon, as it will always be a happy ending in commercial films. I still wonder how heroes and heroines get healed after bullet piercing the chest and villain dies immediately if the same happen to him. Double meaning dialogues of vivek really debase the movie. Villain attacking the relationships of hero is oft seen from films of yore. Here Inspector Ravi( bose venkat), able aide of durai Singam dies. Few sentimental lines during the fast paced opening song, this kind of formulaic elements, could be removed.
Despite few points on the flip side, film is watch worthy. Suriya and hari had joined hands for the third time to provide viewers a complete entertainer and had succeeded in their objective. Hope it is a hat trick for them. Singam is a definite watch for suriya fans and for others, just go and watch it, the film is quite engrossing.
